The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, MBBS (Ib.), Cert. Gastro (Tel-Aviv), MSc. (Ib.), Ph.D (Ib.), FUICC, FWACP, FACG, FRCP (Glasg), MNIM, FIPM (UK) as the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. He succeeded Professor Temitope Alonge whose tenure ended on 28th February, 2019.
The appointment which took effect from 1st March, 2019, for a term of 4 years in the first instance, was conveyed via a letter Ref. DHS.931/1/281 of 24th January, 2019 signed by the Honourable Minister of Health, Professor I. F. Adewole.
Born on 17th December, 1961, Professor J. A. Otegbayo attended lla Grammar School, lla-Orangun between 1977-1978, Methodist Grammar School, Otan-lle from 1978-1980 and Command Secondary School, Kaduna between 1980-1983. He obtained the MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan in November, 1989; a Certificate in Immunology, the University of Ibadan in 2001 and Master of Science Degree in Chemical Pathology/Immunology of the same University in year 2003. He was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy by the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel in 2002 and also has a Ph.D degree in Chemical Pathology/Immunology from the University of Ibadan in 2011. Professor Otegbayo is a Fellow of the West African College of physicians (FWACP) 1998, and Fellow of the Union Internationale Contre Cancer/International Union Against Cancer (UICC); a Fellow of the American college of Gastroenterology (FACG) in June, 2009; Fellow, Royal College of Physicians (Glasgow) in 2015. He was promoted Professor of Medicine in the University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 2008.
He was Sub-Dean, Undergraduate, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (2002-2004). He also served as Director of Clinical Services Research and Training and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the Hospital for two terms from 2010-2014. He served as World Bank Consultant to the Ministry of Health & Sanitation of Sierra Leone for establishment of Post graduate Medical Training from January 2015 to November, 2016. He was Head of Department, Internal Medicine, Babcock University/Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Illishan, Ogun State from 2015 to 2016. He was the pioneer Chief Medical Director, University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospital Complex, Freetown from December 2016- December 2017. He was Head, Department of Medicine, UI/UCH, Ibadan from 2018 till he was appointed as the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital.
Professor Otegbayo is a quiet, humble and firm person with commitment to the common good of this hospital. He was President, Association of Resident Doctors, UCH, Ibadan (1995-1996), National Vice President, National Association of Resident Doctor of Nigeria (1996-1997); National Publicity Secretary/Public Relations Officer, MDCAN (2003-2005); Chairman, MDCAN, UCH Branch (2006 – 2008), after serving as Assistant General Secretary, General Secretary and Vice Chairman. He was member, State Executive Council, NMA, Oyo State (2006-2008).
He is a member of several learned societies and professional bodies locally and internationally and has attended several academic professional conferences locally and internationally. He is an international collaborator, reviewer and member, editorial boards of local and international journals as well as an External Examiner to many Universities within and outside the country. He served as co-ordinator for Gastroenterology sub-Specialty (2019-2022) and currently the President of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN).
Professor Otegbayo is a renowned researcher with over 100 publications to his credit. A Consultant physician & Gastroenterologist, he is happily married to Prof. (Mrs.) Bolanle Otegbayo, an Associate Professor of Food Science and Technology, Bowen University, Iwo, Nigeria and the marriage is blessed with godly children.
Professor Otegbayo has since completed his first term as Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and has commenced his second term with effect from 1st of March, 2023.
Dr. Adeoye obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Ilorin in 1992, he later obtained a Master of Science M.Sc. (Epidemiology) degree from the University of Ibadan in 2014.
Mrs. Juliana Oluyemisi Matthew was born on 22nd August, 1966. She had her secondary education at Ajasse Ipo High School, Ajasse Ipo, Kwara State and Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Osun State respectively from 1979 to 1983. She proceeded to the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti where she had her National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Accountancy in 1988 and 1991 respectively. In a bid to get more knowledge, she decided to further her education which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, a degree she earned in 2013. In addition, she bagged a Postgraduate degree of Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Financial Management option with effect from 2007.
Dr. (Mrs.) Patricia Obiajulu Onianwa was born on 19th October, 1964. She attended St. Maira Goretti Girls College, Benin City from 1976-1982. She thereafter proceeded to the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she bagged her RN and RM certificates of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in 1985 and 1988 respectively. In a bid to acquire more knowledge, she proceeded to the University of Ibadan for her Bachelor of Nursing Science Degree which she obtained in 1995. Thereafter, she bagged a Masters of Personnel Psychology from the University of Ibadan in 1997 and subsequently bagged her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa in 2011.
Mrs. M.A. Akintayo was born on the 26th June, 1965. She attended St. Anne’s School, Ibadan from 1977 to 1983 after which she proceeded to the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife from 1984 to 1989 where she bagged a Bachelor degree in Medical Rehabilitation. As a result of her quest for knowledge, she proceeded for Masters Degree programme in Physiotherapy at the University of Ibadan and was awarded the certificate in 201. She is a member of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy.
