NNPC Donate Occupational Health Equipment to UCH
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) recently donated some occupational health equipment to the Hospital’s Department of Occupational Health and Safety so that the
Department could provide best occupational health services to staff of the Hospital and otherworkers in small, medium and large scale industries. The equipment, which includes various instruments to measure health indices in workers and environmental hazards in the workplace, shall enable the Department to make informed decisions on the causality of work-related conditions.
In her Welcome Address at the event, the Head of the Department, Prof. Folashade
Omokhodion noted that the donation was a springboard to the establishment of a functional Occupational Health and Safety Department, and expressed her gratitude to the NNPC for the generous donation.
She explained that over the last 25 years the Department has engaged artisans at the
community level with several intervention programmes to improve their work environment and reduce general and occupational health problems among them. According to her “the clinic has
been tailored to address occupational health problems”.
Prof Omokhodion further stated that “the equipment will increase the Department’s capacity for service delivery, teaching and research, a gesture that would also impact on ‘our training programmes at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan for our postgraduate studies and Residency training in Occupational Health and Community Medicine’.
While receiving the equipment on behalf of the Hospital, the Hospital’s Chairman (MAC), Dr.
Victor Akinmoladun thanked the NNPC for bringing the vision of the new Management to thefore with regards to service and training in occupational health and safety, promising that the donated instrument will be put to the best of use. He therefore charged all members of the Department to continue to deliver on the Hospital’s mandate.
The Medical Director, NNPC Medical Services, Dr. Musa Shaibu expressed his happiness about the development while he also stressed the need to pay attention to occupational health hazards at all times. According to him “every task has an occupational health hazard, we were propelled to donate these equipment to UCH so as to prevent disaster from every occupational hazard that may occur.” He therefore expressed his hopes that the donated equipment will help improve Nigeria’s global occupational health indices.
The highlight of the event was the commissioning of the state-of-the-art equipment and a consulting room belonging to the Occupational Health and Safety Department.
