Private Suites

The Private Suites, operates as an intra-mural private practice within the Hospital, giving qualitative private health care services to Nigerians and non-Nigerians who so desire, and, or who would have otherwise been referred abroad for medical care. Operating with well qualified, experienced professionals, the Private Suites is the first of such to be established in any Nigerian Teaching Hospital and has remained a point of reference for intra-mural private practice in the Country.

The Private Suites is located on the 4th floor of the Neurosciences building of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The in-patient facility consists of 7 Executive and 15 Mini en-suited rooms, strategically situated between, laboratories, mini theatres, ultrasound suites, and a pharmacy for the comfort of her clients. Each room is well furnished with hospital beds, air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions and digital decoders. There are 2 elevators specially dedicated to the Private Suites, which is sometimes used by other patients when necessary.

The Private Suites was established to provide a marketable product that will be attractive to many Nigerians and non-Nigerians who will continually benefit from quality health care within the hospital setting.

Few months before the commencement of operations within the Suites, precisely, June 28, 2007 a major meeting was held with the Hospital’s Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) members to discuss and agree on the modus operandi and the policies that would guide her operations. Subsequently, the Private Suites though commissioned in December 2005, formally commenced operations on the 17th of September, 2007 after a 2-week orientation/training conducted for the members of staff of the Suites. Medical officers and Nursing personnel especially were trained on how to handle the state-of-the-art medical equipment supplied new by Huntleigh Medicals,UK. The pioneering staff members were 3 Administrative Managers with one being the head, 9 Nurses, and 4 Medical Officers. Subsequently, other personnel of various medical, para and non-medical professions joined the workforce of the Private Suites to make the staff force sixty-five (65) in number. These included more Nurses, Account and Clerical Officers, Phlebotomists, Health Attendants, Kitchen and Laundry Officers among others. Some members of staff such as Pharmacists, Laboratory Scientists, Records and Stores Officers were also seconded from various departments to work in the Private Suites.

The Private Suites is directly under the supervisory management of the Chief Medical Director, through the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the Hospital. The Department of Family Medicine oversees the Medical officers who run uninterrupted services (24hours), while the Senior Registrars and Consultants are on regular rotation to cover the medical activities, and to work hand-in-hand with Consultants of various specialities on the care of both the in-patients and out-patients.

The day-to-day activities, co-ordination/administration of the Private Suites is overseen by the Chief Administrative officer, who is also the Officer-in-charge of the place, working under the direct supervision of the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee. Also, the Chief Medical Director, approved for the constitution of a Committee which would oversee the activities of the Suites and report to Management as necessary. The name of the Committee, is the Private Suites Management Committee (PSMC). The Committee operates under the Chairmanship of the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee.

Activities

Processes outside the Private Suites: Initially, investigative and theatre procedures were done on priority at the general side of the Hospital, but at present, the Private Suites has ultrasound & ECG Suites, It also awaits the installation of a new mobile X-ray machine. In addition, certain laboratory investigations are also carried out in the mini laboratories of the Suites, while some are carried out at the Hospital’s Public Private Partnership Laboratory, at the Private Suites’ rates.

Pharmacy

When the Private Suites became operational, getting medications for patients was cumbersome and time consuming. This made it imperative to make arrangements for the procurement of medications from external Pharmacies on credit in addition to the supplies from the UCH pharmacy. This arrangement continued until the Hospital Pharmacy was able to establish a separate Unit within the Private Suites. Medications from this Unit are issued at a special rate.

Theatre and High Dependency Unit: Two mini theatres are available in the Private Suites to carry out minor and intermediate surgeries, under local and general anaesthesia. Initially, only minor surgeries such as incision and drainage, circumcisions, biopsy etc. were carried out in the Theatre. However, the types of procedures carried out within the Theatre later changed to intermediate and in some cases, major operations. The facility also has two high dependency suites, to take care of semi-ICU patients as well

Achievements

In spite of the challenges that have been experienced from inception, the Private Suites is a success. The Suites has been self-sustained for about 10 years, providing immediate medical intervention for all high-class clients who would have travelled abroad for such care. It equally provides immediate medical services to staff members, relations and others who are in dire medical need during industrial actions, in addition to sometimes serving as a financial buffer for the Hospital.
