UCH COMMISSIONS FIRST RAD-AID (PACS) REPORTING SYSTEM IN AFRICA
The University College Hospital (UCH) has commissioned the first-ever radiology Pictorial Archiving Communication System (PACS) on the African continent. This was made known by the Hospitals Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo at the official commissioning of the UCH-RAD-AID Radiology reporting room in the hospital yesterday.
The importance of radiology can not be undermined in healthcare delivery, without radiology, ultrasound, mammography screening, CT scan, MRI and angiography may be impossible. To this end, RAD-AID International, an organization working in over 30 countries to improve radiology healthcare in low resource regions of the world through education, training, and economic development, has partnered with the hospital by successfully donating and installing a Pictorial Archiving Communication System
PACS system. The installation now puts the RAD-AID friendship cloud on three continents: Guyana (South America), Laos (Asia) and Nigeria (Africa).
According to the current Head, Department of Radiology, UCH, Prof. Omolola Atalabi, ” with the PACS reporting system, the hospital can now provide consultations for interpreting the images via teleradiology,” an electronic transmission of images for internet-based consultation and interpretation.
Upon assuming office in March this year, Prof. Otegbayo unveiled his patient-centered policy that aims to improve patient care and experience in the hospital, according to him “digitalizing radiological reporting is one of the first steps my administration is taking to launch the hospital into quaternary standards, this will step up our game in clinical practice, it will also serve as a training hub for Interventional Radiology in the African continent.”
